Michael Owen: Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil ‘not even close’ to Liverpool man
Michael Owen claims that Raheem Sterling is a better player than Arsenal's Mesut Ozil
Michael Owen has claimed that Mesut Ozil is “not even close” to being at the same level as Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling.
Ozil put in an impressive performance as Arsenal ran out 4-1 winners over Liverpool at Emirates Stadium on Saturday to give their hopes of Champions League qualification a big boost.
The Germany playmaker scored Arsenal’s second goal with a sublime free-kick as Arsene Wenger’s men impressed against the Merseysiders in north London.
However, former England striker Owen says that Ozil has failed to live up to expectations following his £42.5m transfer to Emirates Stadium from Real Madrid back in 2013.
Asked whether Sterling could fit into the current Arsenal team, Owen told BT Sport: “I would think so, they would find some way.
“He’s better than Ozil, I think he’s probably better than [Danny] Welbeck.”
His comments were then picked up by the media, prompting Owen to take to Twitter to underline his belief that Sterling is better than Ozil.
Owen tweeted: “It seems my claim that Sterling is a better player than Ozil made some headlines today. Is there a debate? Not even close.”
Arsenal are currently second in the Premier League table and seven points behind leaders Chelsea.
