Mourinho delivers latest Chelsea injury update ahead of Arsenal trip
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho says Diego Costa is unlikely to feature against Arsenal at The Emirates
Jose Mourinho says Chelsea striker Diego Costa is a major doubt for their clash against Arsenal at The Emirates on Sunday afternoon.
The Spain international is still struggling to secure match fitness after the 26-year-old injured his hamstring inside 12 minutes of their 2-1 victory over Stoke City earlier in April.
The Chelsea manager indicated that the £32m summer signing would likely be fit for the trip to north London ahead of their 1-0 win against Manchester United last weekend.
However, Mourinho revealed that the former Atletico Madrid man was facing an uphill struggle to be fit for the game against second-placed Arsenal, who have won their last eight league games.
“Diego Costa is nearly there. If not Arsenal then Leicester. We are coping for the difficulties of every match without him,” Mourinho told his pre-match media conference at Cobham training ground on Friday afternoon.
“The team is playing in a different way but we are doing our job. We are more strategic and less artistic but are getting results.
“I would love Diego to be back but I trust the other people. Dominic Solanke did not play yesterday with the U21s to be ready if we need him.”
Costa has scored 19 goals in 24 Premier League games, although the striker’s second half of the season has been disrupted by a series of hamstring niggles.
The Spain striker joined Chelsea in a £32m deal from La Liga champions Atletico Madrid last July.
