Mourinho delivers latest Chelsea injury update ahead of Stoke clash
Jose Mourinho suggests that Diego Costa is likely to feature for Chelsea against Stoke City on Saturday
Jose Mourinho says Diego Costa should be available for selection for Chelsea’s clash with Stoke City on Saturday.
The striker has been struggling with a muscular injury in recent weeks but is likely to be fit and ready to face the Potters at Stamford Bridge.
Mourinho also confirmed that midfielder John Obi Mikel will sit out Saturday’s game because of fatigue, despite the midfielder not having started a game since the FA Cup loss to Bradford.
Speaking at his pre-match news conference on Friday afternoon at Chelsea’s Cobham training ground, Mourinho said: “We have no injuries, but Mikel is not selected. He is fine and working all week but he very tired so he is not selected but not injured.
“Diego Costa trained yesterday am today, he’s not injured, I don’t know if I’ll start him or not. I need to make a decision, but the medical department is empty.”
Mourinho also said that Eden Hazard would start Saturday’s game in west London, despite a busy international break for the playmaker with Belgium.
Mourinho continued: “Hazard is tired because of two matches in three days, but we think he can recover and obviously he starts tomorrow.
“He’s important, I want to play him every time and his coach for his country wants to play him every time.”
Chelsea head into Saturday’s game against Stoke City six points clear at the top of the Premier League table and having played a game less than their closest rivals.
The Blues snatched a 3-2 win at Hull City in their most recent game.
