Novak Djokovic has announced that he will not play in the Mutua Madrid Open next month.

The world No1 plans to take a break before continuing with his planned schedule in Rome and at Roland Garros.

The 27-year-old, who won the Madrid tournament back in 2011, also missed last year’s event. The Madrid Open takes place from 1 to 10 May 2015.

Djokovic has opted not to compete in Madrid for the second year running, having dropped out last season due to an injured right wrist.

The news of his absence means that Roger Federer is automatically promoted to number one seed in the men’s draw.
