Paul Merson: Liverpool and Arsenal could complete best transfer ever

Paul Merson believes that a Liverpool deal to sell Raheem Sterling and sign Theo Walcott would be the 'best transfer ever'

Paul Merson has urged Liverpool to do everything in their power to try and push through a swap deal with Arsenal involving Raheem Sterling and Theo Walcott.

Reports in the British media this month have claimed that the Gunners are considering making an offer for the 20-year-old Sterling and including Walcott as part of the deal.

Sterling is out of contract in the summer of 2017 but speculation about his future has gathered pace in recent weeks after he turned down the offer of a new £100,000 a week deal from the Merseyside club.

And former Arsenal man Merson believes that a cash-plus-player deal for Sterling would seen Liverpool complete the “best deal ever”.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Merson said: “If Theo Walcott goes to Liverpool, Raheem Sterling goes to Arsenal and Liverpool get some money, I think Liverpool have had the best deal ever.

“If he goes to Arsenal, will he play? I don’t think he’s an Arsenal player. I don’t think he gets his head up or moves the ball quick enough.”

Sterling played the full 90 minutes as Arsenal thrashed Liverpool 4-1 at Emirates Stadium in the Premier League earlier this month.

The winger has scored six goals and made seven assists in 29 Premier League games so far this season.
