Paul Merson: Why Man United will beat Man City in Sunday’s derby
Paul Merson says Manchester United are the clear favourites heading into their clash with Manchester City
Paul Merson is expecting Manchester United to beat Manchester City in Sunday’s derby at Old Trafford.
United head into the showdown in good form, after having secured wins over Liverpool and Aston Villa in their most recent Premier League outings.
Louis van Gaal’s men have won eight of their last 10 top-flight outings and are currently third in the Premier League table.
City, meanwhile, have dropped down to fourth place in the table after slumping to a surprise 2-1 defeat by Crystal Palace.
Manuel Pellegrini’s side have been in stuttering form in recent weeks and have only won four of their last 10 Premier League games.
And former Arsenal midfielder Merson feels that United are the favourites heading into this weekend’s showdown at Old Trafford.
“If you had asked me six weeks ago I would have said that City would be the biggest banker you’d ever see in your life but I don’t see that now,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“Manchester United are favourites. They’ve turned a corner. They are buying in to what the manager wants.
“Wayne Rooney is now playing up front. How did we all know his best position is a striker but it takes a manager that has worked for a national team so long?
“Robin van Persie won’t start. I think he’s surplus to requirements. I’d be shocked if he’s there at the end of the season.
“Louis van Gaal has got everybody confident and playing well while City’s confidence must be low, they’ve lost three in a row. You can’t just turn it on, like a tap.”
Manchester United could have Robin van Persie back available for selection after the Dutch striker returned to training earlier this week following his lay-off with an ankle injury.
