Chris Smalling says he is happy to part of an exciting time for Manchester United after he signed a new long-term deal on Tuesday afternoon.

The England international has put pen to paper on a new four-and-a-half year deal at Old Trafford which will see the defender stay until June 2019.

Smalling has been a regular in Louis van Gaal’s back four this season despite the Red Devils suffering a series of injury crises throughout the campaign.

The 26-year-old took to his Instagram account to express his delight at a new contract after United confirmed the news on their Twitter page.

Smalling posted the above photo and wrote the following caption: “Proud and honoured to sign a new deal at the club. This is an exciting time for everyone at United and I’m looking forward to the future. @manchesterunited”

Smalling has won two Premier League titles and made 147 United appearances since the centre-half moved to the club from Fulham in 2010.

The versatile defender, who was unable to prevent a 1-0 loss to Chelsea on Saturday, has scored four goals in 20 Premier League appearances under Van Gaal this term.
