QPR 0 Chelsea 1: Jose Mourinho hails ‘important step’
Jose Mourinho praises his Chelsea side's spirit after their dramatic victory over Queens Park Rangers
Jose Mourinho saluted his Chelsea team for taking an “important step” towards the Premier League title with a dramatic 1-0 win at Queens Park Rangers on Sunday.
After a goalless 88 minutes in which QPR battled hard at Loftus Road, Cesc Fabregas scored the vital winner for Mourinho’s men after good work by Eden Hazard and Oscar.
The victory took the Blues a step closer towards their first Premier League title since 2010 and moved them seven points ahead of Arsenal with a game in hand.
The win means that the Blues need just 11 points from their remaining seven games to wrap up the title.
And Mourinho was full of praise for the spirit shown by his side at Loftus Road on Sunday.
“It is an important step,” Mourinho told BBC Sport after Sunday’s victory.
“The best quality was we controlled the game very well. They can score, have dangerous players and are very direct. We kept calm and tried to keep calm against a side who were very well organised defensively.
“During the season you always have these moments where you lose and win points at end of the game. We lost points at the end at Old Trafford and won points in last few minutes today.
“I always thought it was very important to keep a clean sheet because it was always going to be difficult to keep a clean sheet here.”
The Portuguese manager continued: “It is one step closer. We need three wins and two draws. When we have one match more to play than the other teams.
“Our situation is good. Pure mathematics. We need 11 points.”
Chelsea’s next game is a home clash with Manchester United next weekend in the Premier League, before a trip to second-placed Arsenal on 26 April.
