Robbie Savage: Arsenal can make massive statement against Chelsea

Robbie Savage believes Arsenal are two signings away from a Premier League title challenge

Arsenal can make a massive statement ahead of the new season if the Gunners beat Chelsea at The Emirates on Sunday, according to Robbie Savage.

The north London side have won eight successive games in the Premier League, including a 4-1 victory over Liverpool earlier this month.

However, Arsene Wenger has failed to mastermind a win against Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea side in 12 attempts, making the Blues slight favourites.

Former United midfielder Savage believes Arsenal are just two players short of launching a sustained title bid, adding that victory on Sunday could be huge for the FA Cup finalists.

“I know we have been here before, with Arsenal finishing a campaign strongly and their fans saying ‘next year is our year’, only to be proved wrong,” Savage told BBC Sport. “This time it is different, though.

“If I was Wenger I would sign Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin to play alongside Coquelin and maybe buy another tough centre-half too.

“But the rest of the Gunners’ squad is good enough to challenge for the title and now they have the mentality to match too.”

Mourinho, who sealed a return to Chelsea in June 2013 after a five-year absence, masterminded victories over Arsenal on Wenger’s 500th and 1,000th games in charge of the north London side.
