Rodgers delivers latest Liverpool injury update after Arsenal loss
Brendan Rodgers reveals that Mario Balotelli missed Liverpool's 4-1 loss at Arsenal with a minor knee injury
Brendan Rodgers has revealed that Mario Balotelli was not available for Liverpool’s clash with Arsenal on Saturday due to a minor knee injury.
The Italy striker did not travel with the Reds to north London as Arsene Wenger’s men sealed a comprehensive 4-1 win over the Merseyside outfit.
Rodgers, whose side were also without the suspended Martin Skrtel and Steven Gerrard, revealed that Balotelli suffered the problem in training on Friday.
Speaking at his post-match news conference at Emirates Stadium, Rodgers said: “He [Balotelli] trained yesterday afternoon with the team and took a slight knock to his knee. He deemed it that he was not able to travel with the team.
“He felt it was too sore to travel. The medical staff have looked at it. It was something that he himself didn’t feel comfortable with to travel.”
Arsenal went ahead in the 37th minute in north London when Hector Bellerin curled a left-footed shot low into the far post.
Mesut Ozil then made it 2-0 with a sublime free-kick just two minutes later, before Alexis Sanchez drilled home on the stroke of half-time.
Jordan Henderson pulled a goal back from the penalty spot in the second half but Olivier Giroud’s stunning turn and shot added gloss to the scoreline after Emre Can was shown a second yellow card.
Next up for Liverpool is their FA Cup quarter-final replay against Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday night.
