Rodgers gives latest Liverpool injury update ahead of cup clash
Daniel Sturridge is set to undergo a late fitness test ahead of Liverpool's FA Cup clash with Aston Villa at Wembley
Daniel Sturridge will undergo a late fitness test ahead of Liverpool’s FA Cup semi-final clash with Aston Villa at Wembley on Sunday.
The England international missed Monday night’s 2-0 Premier League win over Newcastle United at Anfield due to a hip injury.
Sturridge sat out most of the first half of the season due to calf and thigh injuries and his latest setback has thrown his participation in Sunday’s cup showdown into doubt.
However, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers says that the Reds will do everything possible to give the striker a chance to prove his fitness ahead of Sunday’s clash in north London.
“We’ll give Dan every possibility to be fit for the game,” Rodgers told a news conference on Friday. “We’ll see how he is tomorrow and then we’ll take it from there.”
The Liverpool manager also revealed his delight at having defender Martin Skrtel back available for selection following the Slovakian’s spell on the sidelines due to suspension.
Rodgers continued: “He’s been outstanding this season. Whether we’ve played in a back-four or a back-three. In the last couple of years he’s really come to the fore in terms of the team. It’s great to have him back. He looks fit and strong, so he’ll also be available.”
Liverpool are currently fifth in the Premier League table and four points behind fourth-placed Manchester City heading into the final six games of the season.
