Ron Atkinson: I’d be surprised if Man United don’t beat Chelsea
Former Manchester United manager Ron Atkinson backs the Red Devils to win at Stamford Bridge
Ron Atkinson says he will be surprised if Manchester United don’t beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
The Red Devils make the trip to the Premier League leaders fresh from a 4-2 victory over defending champions Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Louis van Gaal’s side are one of the league’s form teams after a run of six successive victories in the Premier League, including wins against Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.
Former United manager Atkinson makes the Red Devils favourites to emerge victorious from the Stamford Bridge encounter, particularly after Chelsea’s recent unconvincing form.
“Going back three or four weeks ago, I wouldn’t have been fancying United at all but I’d be very surprised if they don’t come out of the weekend certainly without getting beaten,” Atkinson told United’s website.
“I thought Chelsea threw it away at Old Trafford and got too defensive. They tried to hang onto a one-goal lead and invited United onto them. But they were playing very well and it’s fair to say United weren’t.
“I think United are in a bit of a purple patch at the moment and confidence is sky-high. Quite frankly, I wouldn’t be surprised if United won it.”
United were 4-2 winners against Manuel Pellegrini’s City side courtesy of goals from Marouane Fellaini, Ashley Young, Juan Mata and Chris Smalling at Old Trafford last weekend.
Chelsea are seven points clear of second-placed Arsenal, whilst United are a point behind the Gunners in the top four.
The Red Devils drew 1-1 with the west London side at Old Trafford on Boxing Day.
