Wayne Rooney almost joined Chelsea, reveals David Moyes

David Moyes reveals that Wayne Rooney came close to joining Chelsea from Manchester United during his spell at Old Trafford

David Moyes has revealed that Wayne Rooney came “close” to joining Chelsea during his spell as Manchester United manager.

The England striker’s future was the subject of intense speculation after Moyes took over from Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford in the summer of 2013.

Rooney was linked with a possible move to Stamford Bridge before he eventually put pen to paper on a new contract – reportedly worth around £300,000 a week – with the Red Devils in February of last year.

Moyes has revealed that Jose Mourinho was keen to lure Rooney to Chelsea following his return to Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2013, but the Scot was determined to keep the striker at Old Trafford.

Moyes told the Sunday Times: “Chelsea were close to taking him.

“Jose was interested but we wouldn’t do any business. I had to fight to make sure he stayed – and was at the heart, again, of what Manchester United were going to be moving forward.”

Rooney, 29, played the full 90 minutes as United slipped to a 1-0 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. The striker has scored 12 goals and made five assists in 29 Premier League games so far this season.
