Wayne Rooney: Man United ready for ‘edgy’ Man City clash

Wayne Rooney believes that the Manchester derby has become more intense in recent seasons

Wayne Rooney admits that the Manchester derby has become much edgier affair in recent seasons.

Manchester United host local rivals City at Old Trafford on Sunday as they look for a victory to move them four points above their neighbours in the Premier League table.

City have won two of the last three Premier League titles and Rooney believes that their improvement into title challengers in recent seasons has added spice to an already hotly-contested affair.

Speaking to United Review, Rooney said: “Over the last four or five years the rivalry has got a lot fiercer because we’ve been challenging for the same trophies.

“That’s given the fixture that extra bit of spice because you know that when the games come around they could have a big impact on your challenge for trophies.

“So there is an edge to them more than there was before.”

Louis van Gaal’s side have been in fine form in recent weeks. The Red Devils have won eight of their last 10 Premier League games to move up to third place in the table.

That run is in stark contrast to defending champions Manchester City, who have only won four of their last 10 top-flight clashes and slumped to a surprise defeat at Crystal Palace in their most recent Premier League outing.
