Wayne Rooney: My promise to Man United fans ahead of derby

Wayne Rooney wants to put a smile on the faces of Manchester United fans by helping his side win Sunday's derby

Wayne Rooney has promised to do everything possible to put a smile on the face of every Manchester United fan by helping the Red Devils beat City in Sunday’s derby showdown.

Louis van Gaal’s men head into Sunday’s clash at Old Trafford in fine form. United have won eight of their last 10 Premier League games, including a vital victory over top-four rivals Liverpool at Anfield last month.

City, meanwhile, have struggled in recent weeks and have only won four of their last 10 top-flight games to leave Manuel Pellegrini’s men in fourth place in the Premier League table and a point behind their local rivals.

United captain Rooney has stressed the importance of Sunday’s game to the supporters and is confident Van Gaal’s men can deliver a positive result.

“We want to give United fans something to smile about when they go to work on Monday morning, we want them to be the ones to be able to give out the banter to Manchester City fans at work,” Rooney told MUTV.

“I think it’s a very important game for Manchester United and Manchester City… for the fans and, for me, it’s a massive game of pride.”

England captain Rooney has scored 12 goals and made four assists in 27 Premier League games for United so far this season.
