Wenger gives latest Arsenal injury update after Reading win
Arsene Wenger reveals that Per Mertesacker suffered an ankle injury during Arsenal's FA Cup win over Reading
Arsene Wenger has revealed that Per Mertesacker picked up a serious-looking ankle injury during Arsenal’s 2-1 FA Cup semi-final win over Reading on Saturday.
The Germany international was substituted in the 63rd minute at Wembley after suffering the problem and was replaced by defender Gabriel Paulista.
Arsenal needed extra-time to beat Reading as Alexis Sanchez’s two goals sent Wenger’s men through to another FA Cup final.
And speaking after the win at Wembley, Wenger revealed that former Germany international Mertesacker is set for a spell on the sidelines.
Wenger told his post-match news conference on Saturday: “He has an ankle problem. He is limping badly so that doesn’t look too good.”
The Arsenal boss also reserved special praise for Sanchez after another match-winning performance from the Chilean, who joined the Gunners from Barcelona in a £35m deal last summer.
The Arsenal boss, whose side won the FA Cup last season, continued: “He has made a fantastic contribution this season.
“He looked to struggle a little bit to get into the game but he has that stubborn resilience and that individual potential that allows him to always create something special. He gave that again today.”
Arsenal’s next game is a Premier League clash with Chelsea at Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
