Arsenal transfers: Wenger will only make world-class signings, says Gray
Andy Gray doesn't expect Arsenal to splash the cash unless a world-class player becomes available this summer
Arsene Wenger will only sign world-class players like Paul Pogba in the summer transfer window, according to Andy Gray.
The Gunners are finishing the Premier League season in emphatic style after an unbeaten run of nine top-flight games.
He is only going to be interested now in buying a player that makes his team, not his squad, better. Paul Pogba fits into that bracket. He would definitely make Arsenal a better team
Arsenal have climbed up to second place in the table, prompting many pundits to tip the north Londoners to challenge for honours next season.
Former Everton forward Gray believes Wenger still needs to make some quality additions to his Arsenal squad at the end of the season.
“When I look at the Arsenal squad, what Arsene Wenger doesn’t need is numbers,” Gray told talkSPORT.
“He has a fantastically deep squad with a lot of good players. What he needs is quality, and I think he has said that himself.
“He is only going to be interested now in buying a player that makes his team, not his squad, better. Paul Pogba fits into that bracket. He would definitely make Arsenal a better team.
“I think Arsenal will only go into the market this summer if they can get two big ones and, if they can, they will pay what they need to.”
Arsenal have been linked with a move for Porto striker Jackson Martinez and Barcelona forward Pedro Rodriguez in recent weeks.
The FA Cup finalists are also rumoured to be cashing out-of-favour Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech, although Jose Mourinho is reluctant to sell to a rival.
Wenger set a new club-record when the Frenchman signed Mesut Ozil in a £42.5m deal from Real Madrid in 2013 before he snapped up Alexis Sanchez in a £35m transfer from Barcelona.
