The Red Devils were knocked out of both domestic cup competitions earlier in the season but remain on course to achieve their primary objective of securing qualification for next term’s Champions League.
United are currently fourth in the Premier League table and need just one more win to guarantee their place in Europe’s elite club competition next season.
Van Gaal’s men take on Wenger’s Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday as they look to secure victory and confirm a top-four finish.
And Wenger feels that United are likely to be satisfied with the progress they have made under the Dutchman this term.
Wenger told a news conference on Friday: “They had a bit of a similar development [to us] during the season until they lost those three games [recently], but they were on the way up, like we are.
“You have to know and analyse your squad and then decide what you do, and [Van Gaal] has done that well. Overall you feel they have made progress.”
A win against the Gunners would take United above Arsenal in the table, but the north London side have a game in hand over Van Gaal’s men.
