Brendan Rodgers: Liverpool can put Man United under pressure

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is refusing to concede defeat in the race to a secure a fourth-place finish

Brendan Rodgers believes Liverpool can put Manchester United under pressure in the race for a fourth-place finish.

The Reds currently trail fourth-placed Manchester United by five points with three Premier League games remaining in the current campaign.

Although the Red Devils have lost three top-flight games on the spin, Liverpool have failed to capitalise after dropping points against Hull City and West Bromwich Albion.

While the Liverpool manager accepted their fate is out of their hands, Rodgers urged the Reds to keep battling until the end of the season to capitalise on any United slip-up.

“If we can win our last three games, it would certainly make it interesting,” Rodgers told assembled media at his press conference on Friday afternoon.

“It is out of our hands. That’s the reality. But if we can finish that way it would certainly be close. They are three big games for us and you might find yourself not too far away.

“I just think for us to be challenging after the start we had, the players deserve incredible credit. To be so far behind at the beginning and midway through the season, with some difficult moments along the way, to at least be in the fight is important for us.”

The Red Devils suffered a surprise 1-0 defeat by Tony Pulis’ West Bromwich Albion side at Old Trafford in the Premier League last weekend.

Liverpool, meanwhile, were 2-1 winners against Queens Park Rangers at Anfield after departing skipper Steven Gerrard scored a late winner for the hosts.

United make the trip to Crystal Palace on Saturday, whilst Liverpool take on newly-crowned champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
