Chelsea’s Jose Mourinho reveals failed attempts to sign Liverpool captain
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho says he tried to sign Steven Gerrard during his spells in charge of Inter and Real Madrid
Jose Mourinho has revealed that he tried to sign Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard during his spells in charge of Inter Milan and Real Madrid.
The Blues boss is set to send out a side to face the 34-year-old midfielder for the final time on Sunday afternoon as the Reds make the trip to Stamford Bridge.
I want to honour him and I hope Stamford Bridge has the same feeling
Gerrard is set to join Major League Soccer outfit LA Galaxy at the end of the season after having failed to agree a new contract with his boyhood club.
Speaking at his pre-match media conference at Cobham training ground on Friday afternoon, Mourinho paid tribute to the Liverpool skipper.
“I am sad he is leaving the same as our Frank Lampard, but Frank is a Chelsea legend and it’s a different situation because Steven was always on the other side,” Mourinho said.
“I tried to bring him to Chelsea, I tried to bring him to Inter, I tried to bring him to Real Madrid but he was always with the enemy. I want to honour him and I hope Stamford Bridge has the same feeling.”
Liverpool are five points fourth-placed United in the race to secure the final Champions League spot with three Premier League games remaining in the season.
The Reds have been linked with a move for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Yohan Cabaye in recent weeks.
