Philippe Coutinho and Lucas Leiva were among the Liverpool players that tribute to captain Steven Gerrard after the Reds midfielder made his final Anfield appearance on Sunday.

The 34-year-old was unable to come to his boyhood club’s rescue one final time as Liverpool suffered a 3-1 defeat by Crystal Palace in their last home game of the season.

However, the loss didn’t dampen the Reds squad’s spirit as Gerrard’s team-mates all posted the individual tribute to their Liverpool skipper ahead of his departure.

The club’s player of the year Phillipe Coutinho thanked the Champions League winner for everything that he has done to help the Brazilian’s career so far.

Coutinho wrote: “What a pleasure to play at your side. Thanks for everything. Great character, what a player (the best), Great teammate, Great captain! LEGEND @stevengerrard”

Fellow Brazilian Lucas Leiva, who has been Gerrard’s team-mate for the best part of eight years, described the former England international as a role model.

Lucas posted: “Thanks for all these years and for being a role model and a top guy. All the best for your future.”

Alberto Moreno, meanwhile, was ecstatic just to get the chance to play with a living legend for one season following his £12m switch from Sevilla last summer.

Moreno said: “Was amazing to have the chance to play with this LEGEND. THANKS STEVEN!! @stevengerrard. #ynwa #stevengerrard #toplayer #amazing #crack #liverpoolfc”

Croatia international Dejan Lovren said he regrets that he only had the opportunity to play with the Liverpool skipper for one season after his switch from Southampton last year.

Lovren wrote: “Thank you for fullfilling one of my dreams as you are not only a true football legend but also one of the best persons I had the pleasure to meet. My only regret is that I only had this one season to play with you but I will tresure it forever. I wish you all the best on the road ahead. Heroes come and go, but LEGENDS are forever. @stevengerrard #YNWA”

Finally, Jose Enrique is under no illusion that Gerrard is the club’s greatest-ever player.

Enrique posted: “The best ever player to play for liverpool. Is the king this guy both on and off the pitch. Wishing you all the best mate! We will miss you! @stevengerrard”
