The Netherlands winger is set to join the Red Devils officially next month after United agreed a deal with PSV Eindhoven to bring the 21-year-old to Old Trafford.
He’s got to settle in the country and get used to playing football in Manchester
However, former United defender Neville believes that it will take some time for Depay to settle at the club and warned fans not to expect too much from him too soon.
Speaking to Sky Sports on Sunday, Neville said: “It’s a typical Manchester United signing to sign someone who has got potential but hasn’t yet grown to become the finished product.”
He added: “I think Depay looks like an exciting player but there’s a lot of obstacles to overcome to determine as to whether he going to become the real deal.
“He’s got to settle in the country and get used to playing football in Manchester. It will be different but it fits the bill in terms of him being a young player.”
Depay scored 22 goals and made five assists in 30 Eredivisie games to help PSV win the Dutch league this season. He also netted three times in the Europa League.
Manchester United, who have secured a top-four finish during Van Gaal’s first season in charge at the club, travel to Hull City in their final Premier League game next weekend.
