Gary Neville: What Arsenal need to beat Chelsea to the title next season
Gary Neville runs the rule over Arsenal's possible transfer plans for the summer window
Gary Neville believes that Arsenal are in need of two or three key players during the summer transfer window to transform themselves into title contenders next season.
The Gunners beat Hull City 3-1 at the KC Stadium on Monday night to move to within three points of second-placed Manchester City.
Arsenal will finish second in the Premier League if they win their remaining four games.
But as attentions begin to turn towards next season, former Manchester United defender Neville has underlined what he thinks the Gunners still need.
Neville told Sky Sports: “They have to make that extra jump.
“Hypothetically, you Diego Costa, Nemanja Matic and John Terry in that team and you probably win the title. So how do they find a Costa, Matic and Terry? Those players are not readily available – everyone wants them.
“They need that three or four players to hold that spine together. Because what they’ve got around it with Ramsey, Ozil, Welbeck, Sanchez… all those players are fantastic – but they need that spine to be strong right the way through a season.
“At the moment, I think it’s whether Arsene Wenger can get his hands on those two or three players.
“We know what Arsenal can do, it’s that’s next bit – whether they can do that with Cazorla and Coquelin in central midfield or if they need something different as well.”
Alexis Sanchez opened the scoring at the KC Stadium with a deflected free-kick in the 28th minute, before Aaron Ramsey netted a second just five minutes later.
Sanchez then rounded goalkeeper Steve Harper to slot home and make it 3-0 on the stroke of half-time.
Stephen Quinn’s header gave Hull hope after the break, but the Gunners held on to move to within three points of second-placed Manchester City.
