Jamie Carragher: Why I agree with Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger about Jose Mourinho
Jamie Carragher believes that Jose Mourinho must accept failure should be seen as a source of motivation
Jamie Carragher agrees with Arsene Wenger’s assessment that Jose Mourinho has a “fear of failure” and claims that the Chelsea boss should accept the Arsenal boss’s comments.
The Arsenal manager sparked an angry reaction from his Chelsea counterpart last season when he claimed that Mourinho was scared of failing, with the Portuguese coach then famously branding Wenger a “specialist in failure”.
However, Carragher feels that Wenger was within his rights to make the statement about the Chelea boss, and has urged Mourinho to accept that fear and failure should be seen as a source of motivation rather than a threat to his ego.
Carragher wrote in his column for the Daily Mail: “Arsene Wenger had a point, even if Jose Mourinho didn’t appreciate it. Arsenal’s manager lit a fuse when, in February 2014, he suggested his Chelsea counterpart had a ‘fear of failure’.
“Inevitably, there was an explosion, prompting Mourinho to label Wenger a ‘specialist in failure’. The feud between the pair continues to simmer.
“What I can’t understand, though, is why Mourinho — who is three points away from lifting the Barclays Premier League trophy — took such offence.
“Fearing failure isn’t a sign of weakness. It is a source of motivation. It keeps you on the edge.
“Mourinho isn’t afraid of losing a game of football but he doesn’t want to consider a day when his teams are not pushing for the honours that everyone wants. ”
Mourinho’s Chelsea side host Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon knowing that a victory will win them the Premier League title.
The Blues, who are 13 points clear at the top of the table, have not won the top-flight crown since 2010.
