Jamie Carragher: Why Tottenham have been key in Chelsea’s season

Jamie Carragher has described Tottenham as a “key team” in Chelsea’s season as the Blues close in on the Premier League title.

The Blues beat Tottenham 2-0 to win the League Cup back in March and secure their first piece of silverware since Jose Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge back in the summer of 2013.

Spurs sealed a memorable 5-3 win over Chelsea at White Hart Lane on New Year’s Day but the Blues have been in solid form since and now need just one more win to secure their first Premier League title triumph since 2010.

And former Liverpool defender Carragher feels that Chelsea’s clashes with Spurs this season have ended up being key to the Blues’ campaign.

Carragher wrote in his column for the Daily Mail: “Jose Mourinho spoke of his “embarrassment” that he had gone two seasons without silverware — the wait, he said, felt like 20 years — and how he “felt like a kid”, such was his joy after the 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

“In some ways, Tottenham have been the key team in Chelsea’s campaign. Something definitely changed after Mourinho’s side lost 5-3 at White Hart Lane on January 1, a night when Manchester City drew level with them at the top of the table.”

“Was that the night he felt ‘the fear’? Chelsea had been open to that point but, since then, they have played 14 games and kept seven clean sheets in the Premier League, getting back to defensive standards we expect of a Mourinho team.

Chelsea, who are currently 13 points clear at the top of the Premier League table, host Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge on Sunday knowing victory would secure the title.
