Liverpool are a step ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign Memphis Depay, according to PSV Eindhoven.
The Red Devils were thought to be leading the hunt to sign the Netherlands international amid reports that his representatives flew to Manchester last week.
It’s an exception that so many clubs have already shown an interest in Memphis
Depay played under current United boss Louis van Gaal at last summer’s World Cup in Brazil as the Dutch finished in third place in the tournament.
However, PSV sporting director Marcel Brands claimed that Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain are the front-runners in the race to sign Depay.
“PSG and Liverpool are indeed a step ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign Memphis. United have only informed us about their interest,” Brands told Fox Sports.
“The list of interested clubs has grown in recent weeks but Bayern Munich are not among theteams that want to sign him.
“It’s only logical that there is a lot of movement around Memphis. He is still a young player but is already hugely efficient. He should be proud of that.
“There isn’t usually a lot of movement in the transfer market at this stage of the season. It’s an exception that so many clubs have already shown an interest in Memphis.
“That only illustrates that he’s on the right track.”
Depay scored 22 goals in 28 Eredivise appearances last season as the Dutch forward helped fire PSV to the Dutch top-flight crown last weekend.
The 21-year-old has netted 37 times in 87 games in the Dutch top-flight.
The United manager has already signed Depay’s Dutch team-mate Daley Blind, who completed a £16m move to Old Trafford from Ajax last year.
