Liverpool transfers: Ex-Red wants Christian Benteke signing

David Thompson urges Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers to swoop for Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke

David Thompson has urged Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers to swoop for Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke in the summer transfer window.

The Belgium international is reported to be Liverpool’s top summer target after the Reds missed out on Netherlands international Memphis Depay.

Former Liverpool midfielder Thomspon believes Benteke, who has been previously linked with Tottenham Hotspur, would offer something different to the Reds side.

Benteke has scored 12 goals in 26 Premier League appearances this season, and 11 of those strikes have come under Tim Sherwood’s management in the last nine top-flight games.

Thompson, who was a graduate of the Liverpool academy, also welcomed transfer speculation linking Mario Balotelli with a move away from Liverpool in the summer transfer window.

Balotelli has scored just four goals in 26 appearances in all competitions for the Reds this season after the Italy international moved to Liverpool from AC Milan in a £16m deal.
