Louis van Gaal thanked Manchester United’s fans for their support after his side were held to a 1-1 draw with Arsenal on Sunday in their final home game of the season.

The Red Devils took the lead against Arsenal in the 30th minute at Old Trafford when Ander Herrera drilled home from close range.

United dominated proceedings in the first half but Arsenal improved after the break and the north London side equalised in the 82nd minute when substitute Theo Walcott’s cross was deflected in by Tyler Blackett.

The result guaranteed Manchester United a top-four finish in Van Gaal’s first season in charge but dented their hopes of pipping Arsenal to third place.

However, the Dutchman was thrilled the support he and his team have received this season and is hoping to see them celebrate the Premier League title in the coming campaigns.

Speaking on the Old Trafford pitch after the game, Van Gaal said: “Dear fans, I want to say thank you to you, fans, on behalf of my players and my staff.

“You were amazing, especially for me. I want to thank you for that and next year we see each other again. Bye!”

Van Gaal later added: “It’s amazing. I feel the warmth of the fans and I like it very much. They are shouting, clapping… I have never had that experience at other clubs.

“The fans were so fantastic. How will they react when we are the champions?”
