Luis Suarez: Why I’m happy Liverpool captain talked me out of Arsenal move
Barcelona striker Luis Suarez is grateful that Steven Gerrard convinced him to ignore Arsenal interest
Luis Suarez says he is grateful that Steven Gerrard advised him to ignore interest from Arsenal and hold out for a move to Barcelona.
The Uruguay international was the subject of two big-money bids from the north London side before the start of the 2013/14 campaign.
Liverpool rejected Arsenal’s interest and Suarez returned to first-team training after a spell in isolation after he expressed a desire to join the Gunners.
The 28-year-old sealed a £75m move to Barcelona last summer, and Suarez is thankful that he listened to the Liverpool captain and waited for a move to Camp Nou.
“I do owe so much to Steven when Arsenal wanted to sign me,” Suarez told the Express.
“We had a private conversation and he said, ‘give us another season and wait for Barcelona, you are too good for Arsenal’. It is the best advice he could have given. If it was not for him I might not be at Barcelona now.”
Suarez has scored an impressive 16 goals and has made 13 assists in just 26 La Liga appearances for the Catalan side this season.
The Barcelona striker is expected to line up against Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final clash at Camp Nou on Wednesday night.
