Man United transfers: Van Gaal needs top centre-half, says ex-Spurs boss
Former Tottenham manager Gerry Francis believes Louis van Gaal needs to strengthen his defensive options at Man United
Louis van Gaal needs to add an experienced centre-half to his Manchester United squad in the summer transfer window, according to Gerry Francis.
Marcos Rojo, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Jonny Evans have all spent time on the sidelines due to injury throughout the Premier League campaign.
United lost captain Nemanja Vidic to Inter Milan last summer and vice-skipper Patrice Evra joined Juventus, whilst Rio Ferdinand moved to Queens Park Rangers.
Former QPR manager Francis believes Van Gaal needs to strengthen his defensive options over the summer months to ensure the club progresses before next season.
Francis told Sky Sports: “Since Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand have gone, I think they need to strengthen in the defensive area, but it’s not easy to find the kind of experienced defender you need in there.
“But certainly talking to Van Gaal after the game he is definitely looking to make changes again in the summer.
“I think they’ll get fourth, with Arsenal second, Manchester City third and Liverpool fifth.”
Van Gaal has been heavily linked with a big-money move for Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels in recent months.
Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar is another name being linked with a switch to Old Trafford amid growing uncertainty surrounding his future at the FA Cup finalists.
