Michael Carrick says he has improved under Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal this season.

The England international has been one of the Dutchman’s most consistent performers in a mixed first season in charge of the 13-time Premier League champions.

The 33-year-old has scored one goal and has made two assists in 18 top-flight games after an injury-hit campaign for the former Tottenham midfielder.

Despite his fitness problems, Carrick believes he has become a better player under the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager over the course of the campaign.

“Well, we had a bad start [to our relationship] really,” Carrick told Sky Sports News. “On his first day, I went for an operation and was out for three months at the start of the season.

“Since then, he’s been terrific for me; he’s supported me and given me a lot of responsibility. As the season has gone on, I think I’ve shown that on the pitch; I’ve been happy with the way I’ve played.

“He’s a lot more measured and a lot more calculated with the positions he wants me to take up on and off the ball, and also in terms of distribution. If it’s five yards out, he’ll shout to let you know. He adapts and it’s good for me. I’m learning all the time.”

Carrick won’t feature for the Red Devils again this season after the midfielder picked up an injury during a 4-2 victory over Manchester City at Old Trafford last month.

The 20-time English champions have won 72 per cent of their games with Carrick in the side, in comparison to just 32 per cent when 33-year-old has been missing.
