Memphis Depay: Why I chose Man United ahead of Liverpool
Memphis Depay explains why he chose to join Manchester United ahead of any other clubs this summer
Memphis Depay has described his transfer to Manchester United from PSV Eindhoven this summer as “absolute dream” and insists that his decision to move to Old Trafford was not motivated by money.
United confirmed in a statement on Thursday afternoon that they had agreed a deal with PSV for the transfer of the winger when the summer window opens in June, subject to a medical.
Liverpool were thought to be interested in bringing Depay to Anfield this summer, with media reports claiming that manager Brendan Rodgers had held talks with the 21-year-old Netherlands international.
In the end it was just a matter of feeling, not a matter of money
However, Depay insists that he had his heart set on a move to United, where he will link up with former Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal.
In an interview published on SEG Football’s Facebook page, Depay said: “It was an exciting and pretty hectic period, and to have a choice between so many top clubs doesn’t make it any easier.
“For me, Manchester United is an absolute dream club, so I didn’t need any convincing of the guys who already play at Manchester United.
“They told me only positive things though, and I’m looking forward to playing with my Dutch team-mates next to all the other great players of Manchester United. And working with manager Louis van Gaal again is also a big bonus.”
Asked if there were lots of other teams interested in signing him, he added: “Yes, but you shouldn’t believe all the rumours in the media. In the end it was just a matter of feeling, not a matter of money.”
The forward scored 21 goals and made four assists in 28 Eredivise appearances as he helped fire PSV to the Dutch top-flight crown last weekend.
Van Gaal has already signed Depay’s Dutch team-mate Daley Blind, who completed a £16m move to Old Trafford from Ajax last year.
