Paul Merson has accused Arsenal of failing to perform under pressure this season following the Gunners’ third-place finish in the Premier League.

Arsene Wenger’s men secured a top-three spot and a route into the group stage of next season’s Champions League as they wrapped up their season with a 4-1 win over West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.

Arsenal recorded victories over Liverpool and Manchester City this season on their way to ending up in third place.

But the Gunners slumped to a surprise Champions League exit at the hands of Monaco at the last 16 stage.

And Merson feels that the north London side consistently fail to deliver when the pressure is on.

The former Arsenal midfielder told Sky Sports: “When the pressure is off and you can’t win the league, football is a completely different game.

“When you have to go into a game when you’re top of the league or chasing teams down, the pressure is different.

“I’m sorry but, when the pressure is on, they don’t perform, and when it’s off they are the best team in the country.”
