Paul Merson believes Manchester United will edge to victory over Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The Gunners saw their 10-game unbeaten run come to an end on Monday night after Bafetimbi Gomis scored a late winner to help Swansea seal a 1-0 victory at Emirates Stadium.

Louis van Gaal

United, meanwhile, recorded their first victory in four attempts last weekend after Marouane Fellaini netted a 77th-minute header in a 2-1 win against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Former Arsenal midfielder Merson reckons Louis van Gaal’s side will do enough to beat Arsenal, especially with captain Wayne Rooney enjoying a return to form.

“For some reason I just think that United will edge this one. Wayne Rooney seems to be back to his best and although they were a bit lucky to beat Palace last weekend, and Arsenal did win the last time they went to Old Trafford in the FA Cup, I am going for United to win this one 2-1,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“I actually thought United were unlucky to lose that cup game, they played better than many people gave them credit for on the night, and they were not helped either by Angel Di Maria getting sent off.

“And while Arsenal have been on a great run in recent weeks, winning eight games in a row at one point, they never really looked like scoring against Swansea at home on Monday night.

“So I see United turning in a performance here in front of their own fans and just getting the better of Arsenal in this game.”

The 20-time English champions can hoist themselves above Arsene Wenger’s side and into third place if United are winners at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Arsenal have played a game less than the Red Devils, though, with the north Londoners set to face Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion in their final two home games of the season.
