Arsenal transfers: Benedikt Howedes confirms Gunners interest
Benedikt Howedes confirms that Arsenal were keen on signing him from Schalke this summer
Benedikt Howedes has confirmed that Arsenal were among the clubs interested in signing him this summer before he decided to stay at current club Schalke.
The Germany defender has been touted as a possible target for the north London club in recent weeks as Arsene Wenger looks to bolster his defensive options at Emirates Stadium.
The 27-year-old centre-half has been strongly linked with a transfer to Arsenal in recent weeks as Wenger aims to find a long-term replacement for Per Mertesacker.
However, the defender now appears to have made up his mind to stay with the German club beyond the summer.
Howedes is quoted as saying by Metro: “I am able to confirm that Arsenal and AC Milan have been really keen on my services.
“I wouldn’t say that I have chosen against them, but simply that I have decided in favour of Schalke.
“My job here is not yet done and after the disappointment of last season I do not want to leave this way.
“I am a key player of this club and I am staying.”
Arsenal have also been linked with a move for Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech in recent weeks.
The Gunners are also said to be pondering a swoop for Porto forward Jackson Martinez as Wenger aims to add more firepower to his Arsenal squad ahead of next season.
