Exclusive: Petr Cech would be top signing, says Arsenal legend
Arsenal legend Paul Merson believes Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech could save the Gunners lots of points next season
Arsenal need a goalkeeper like Petr Cech who can save the Gunners “a bundle of points” next season, according to Paul Merson.
The FA Cup winners have been heavily linked with a move for the Chelsea goalkeeper in recent months after it became apparent the Czech Republic international would leave Stamford Bridge this summer.
He is still one of the top goalkeepers in the world
Cech, who is a four-time Premier League winner, has found his first-team opportunities limited since the return of Belgium shot stopper Thibaut Courtois from a three-year loan at Atletico Madrid.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger dropped Wojciech Szczesny in favour of David Opsina in the second half of the season but the Colombian is a reported target for Turkish side Fenerbahce amid reports linking Cech with Arsenal.
And former Arsenal midfielder Merson has emphasised the importance of Arsenal signing a goalkeeper in the same stature as Courtois and David De Gea.
“I like Petr Cech. He would be a great signing,” Play With A Legend ambassador Merson told The Sport Review.
“He is still one of the top goalkeepers in the world. If you look at the goalies at the top this season, they’ve saved their teams bundle of points.
“I don’t really think the Arsenal goalkeepers have saved bundle of points.”
Cech made just six Premier League starts under Mourinho last season, racking up just 606 top-flight minutes.
The Czech goalkeeper has won 12 major trophies during his Stamford Bridge career, including four Premier League titles and the Champions League.
