Gary McAllister: Liverpool can seal top-four return with right signings
Former Liverpool midfielder Gary McAllister doesn't believe the Reds are too far away from the top four
Gary McAllister doesn’t believe Liverpool are too far away from a top-four finish next season.
The Reds ended a disappointing Premier League campaign in sixth place after a 6-1 defeat by Stoke City at Britannia Stadium on the final day of the season.
So with the right additions I think Liverpool can get into that top four
Brendan Rodgers appears to be fighting a losing battle in his bid to keep Raheem Sterling, who is reportedly the subject of a £50m offer from Manchester City.
But former Liverpool midfielder McAllister is remaining upbeat about the Merseyside club’s prospects next term, although he admits Rodgers must buy well in summer transfer market.
“[Other teams] will strengthen so that puts the pressure on Brendan to get back in there,” McAllister told Liverpool’s website.
“But you go back two seasons and Liverpool were inches away from actually being champions.
“So with the right additions I think Liverpool can get into that top four.”
Rodgers spent over £110m on new signings last summer but the Liverpool manager had little success with his acquisitions.
The Reds boss has already snapped up English trio James Milner, Danny Ings and Adam Bogan on free transfers.
The five-time European champions announced the signing of Charlton Athletic youngster Joe Gomez, who penned a long-term contract with the club.
