Gary McAllister runs rule over new Liverpool signing James Milner
Former Liverpool midfielder Gary McAllister says James Milner is an excellent addition to the Reds squad
Gary McAllister believes James Milner will prove to be a very good signing for Liverpool.
The England international agreed a deal to join the Reds last month as manager Brendan Rodgers won the battle to sign the midfielder amid interest from rivals Arsenal.
The former Leeds United midfielder is set to join the 18-time English champions on 1 July following the expiration of his current Manchester City deal.
And McAllister, who enjoyed two trophy-laden years at Liverpool following his free transfer in 2000, reckons landing Milner was a major coup for the 18-time English champions.
“[Other teams] will strengthen so that puts the pressure on Brendan to get back in there,” McAllister told Liverpool’s website.
“But you go back two seasons and Liverpool were inches away from actually being champions.
“So with the right additions I think Liverpool can get into that top four.”
Milner has scored four goals and has made six assists in 30 Premier League appearances this season, although the midfielder has only started 16 games.
The England midfielder has won two Premier League titles and the FA Cup following his move to The Etihad from Aston Villa in 2011.
Rodgers has already signed Milner, Danny Ings and Adam Bogdan on free transfers this summer, whilst Joe Gomez joined Liverpool on Saturday.
