John Aldridge: Why Liverpool star can replace Raheem Sterling
Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge believes Jordon Ibe can fill Raheem Sterling's void if the Arsenal target man leaves
John Aldridge believes Liverpool youngster Jordon Ibe is good enough to replace Arsenal target Raheem Sterling.
The England international’s future is up in the air after the 20-year-old’s agent indicated that Sterling won’t be signing a new deal with the 18-time English champions.
Sterling has already been the subject of a reported £40m bid from Manchester City, whilst Arsenal and Manchester United have also been linked with the Liverpool man.
But Aldridge reckons Brendan Rodgers shouldn’t panic as Ibe is a ready-made replacement for the contract rebel should Sterling seal a move away from the Merseyside outfit.
Sterling told talkSPORT: “He’s a terrific player and has got so much potential.
“He’s got as much, if not more potential, than Raheem had at that age. He’s a big strong lad, very direct and a better finisher than Raheem.
“It’s a bonus for Liverpool that they already have one on the shelf.”
The Liverpool man, who scored eight Premier League goals last term, is also a reported target for new Real Madrid manager Rafael Benitez.
Sterling moved to Liverpool from Queens Park Rangers in a £5m deal in 2010 but the forward didn’t blossom until Rodgers’ appointment in May 2012.
