Liverpool transfers: Danny Murphy tells Christian Benteke to turn down Reds
Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy tells Christian Benteke to stay another season at Aston Villa
Christian Benteke should ignore interest from Liverpool and stay at Aston Villa next season, according to Danny Murphy.
The Belgium international has been linked with a host of Premier League clubs already this summer, including Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United.
I think because he’s got age on his side, staying at Villa and having a sensational season might benefit him better in the long-term
Former Liverpool midfielder Murphy believes Anfield or White Hart Lane is a more realistic destination for the 24-year-old striker, who joined Villa in 2012.
However, Murphy believes Benteke would be best-served staying at the FA Cup runners-up for another season before the forward contemplates a big-money move away from Birmingham.
“He wouldn’t get into Manchester City, Chelsea or even Arsenal’s side at the moment, so it would be more like a Liverpool or a Tottenham [who would sign him],” Murphy told talkSPORT.
“The problem is they’re never going to pay £32.5million to get him because last season he didn’t play well enough for a long enough and that was partly down to injuries.
“I would suggest to him stay another year [at Aston Villa], play 35 games, get 20 goals, and then you might get a move to one of the big boys.
“He’s a risky signing for a club to spend £32.5million on now. Inevitably when you have a really difficult injury it’s very hard to come back and play at your best level.
“I think because he’s got age on his side, staying at Villa and having a sensational season might benefit him better in the long-term.”
The Aston Villa striker scored 13 goals and made two assists in 29 Premier League games last season as the former Genk man helped Tim Sherwood’s men beat the drop.
The Belgium international scored twice in the FA Cup for the Villains last season as Sherwood’s side reached the final before a 4-0 loss to Arsenal.
