Liverpool transfers: Nathaniel Clyne will improve Reds, says Mario Melchiot

Former Chelsea defender Mario Melchiot believes Nathaniel Clyne will improve Liverpool next season

Mario Melchiot believes Southampton defender Nathaniel Clyne will strengthen Liverpool.

The England international is reportedly on the brink of an £11.5m move to the Merseyside outfit after successfully completing a medical at Anfield.

Clyne will compete with Javier Manquillo and Jon Flanagan for the right-back spot after veteran Glen Johnson left Liverpool at the end of the season.

Former Chelsea defender Melchiot appears to rank the 24-year-old defender quite highly after the retired Dutch footballer took to his Twitter page on Monday.

Clyne has scored five goals in 104 appearances for the south coast club during a three-year stay at St Mary’s.

The England full-back moved to Southampton from Crystal Palace in a £2.5m deal at the start of the 2012/13 campaign.

The Southampton defender is set to become Liverpool’s sixth signing of the summer following the arrivals of James Milner, Danny Ings, Adam Bogdan, Joe Gomez and Roberto Firmino.
