Man United transfers: Juan Mata hopes David De Gea will stay

Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata wants David De Gea to stay at Old Trafford beyond the summer

Juan Mata admits he is desperate to keep Real Madrid target David De Gea in the Manchester United side.

The Manchester United goalkeeper’s future at Old Trafford is uncertain after months of relentless speculation linking the shot stopper with a move to Madrid.

The Red Devils are believed to be holding out for a £25m offer from Madrid after De Gea failed to agree a contract extension with the 13-time Premier League winners.

But £37.1m signing Mata, who is close friends with the shot stopper, spoke of his desire to keep the Spain international as his team-mate at the 20-time English champions.

“Lots of people ask me about De Gea. He’s a friend and I want him to be happy,” Mata told Marca.

“He’s currently one of the best goalkeepers in the world. From a selfish point of view, I would want to have him in my team.”

The Spain goalkeeper made 37 Premier League appearances during Louis van Gaal’s first season in charge at Old Trafford.

The Spanish shot stopper moved to the Red Devils from Atletico Madrid in 2011.

De Gea, who was signed to replace Edwin van der Sar, won the Premier League title with the Red Devils in 2013.
