Paul Merson: Why Arsenal fans shouldn’t accuse Mesut Ozil of not caring
Gunners legend Paul Merson believes Arsenal club-record signing Mesut Ozil has proven that he is a world-class player
Paul Merson believes Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil proved that he is world class over the course of the Premier League campaign.
The Germany international rekindled his best form in the second half of the season after the World Cup winner returned from a serious knee injury in January.
If you’re having a bad time and you don’t run around a lot, people think you don’t care. That isn’t the case
Ozil finished the 2014-15 Premier League campaign with four goals and five assists as the £42.5m signing helped the north London side win successive FA Cup crowns.
And Gunners legend Merson reckons Ozil is unfairly accused of not caring about the London club because the former Real Madrid midfielder doesn’t match Alexis Sanchez’s relentless work-rate.
“Mesut Ozil is different class. He is world class,” Play With A Legend ambassador Merson told The Sport Review.
“If he ran around like Alexis Sanchez, everybody would think he’s the best player in the world. Everybody is different.
“If you’re having a bad time and you don’t run around a lot, people think you don’t care. That isn’t the case.
“For example Robbie Savage was loved everywhere he went. He worked hard. He wasn’t an Ozil.
“If you’re not playing well and you run around a lot, you’ve always got a chance.
“But I think he is world class.”
Ozil experienced a mixed first season at The Emirates following his club-record £42.5m switch from La Liga giants Real Madrid in 2013.
Alexis Sanchez, however, settled seamlessly into life at the Gunners as the Chile international scored 16 goals and made 18 assists in 35 English top-flight games.
