Queen’s 2015: Britain’s Kyle Edmund withdraws due to injury

Kyle Edmund has been forced to withdraw from the Aegon Championships at Queen's Club because of an abdominal injury

Britain’s Kyle Edmund has been forced to withdraw from the Aegon Championships because of an abdominal injury.

Edmund, whose wild card has been given to 19-year-old Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis, sustained the injury during the French Open and pulled out ahead of his second round match against Nick Kyrgios.

“Kyle desperately wanted to play, and we were looking forward to seeing him, but he hasn’t quite returned to full fitness in time to compete at this level. We wish him a full and speedy recovery.” said tournament director Stephen Farrow.

“At the same time, Thanasi has posted some impressive results this year, he’s an exciting prospect and this is a great opportunity to show what he can do.”

Kokkinakis broke into the world’s top 100 recently (he is now at a career-high No.69).

This year, he has reached the second round at his home Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open, the last 16 in Indian Wells, and he qualified for and won his first challenger title in Bordeaux.

Kokkinakis joins a line-up which contains 8 of the world’s top 14 players – Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, Stan Wawrinka, Milos Raonic, Grigor Dimitrov, Marin Cilic, Gilles Simon and Feliciano Lopez. They are joined by Nick Kyrgios, John Isner and wild card Lleyton Hewitt.

The upgrading of the Aegon Championships to ATP-500 in 2015 means that there will be an additional $1 million of prize money. With The Championships, Wimbledon moving back a week in the calendar to expand the grass court season, there is also an extra week between the French Open and the start of the Aegon Championships. The singles draw has been reduced from 56 to 32 to ensure that the top seeds will all play singles on either Monday or Tuesday.
