Rob Jones: Why Raheem Sterling will regret move more than Liverpool
Former Liverpool defender Rob Jones believes Raheem Sterling will be making a big mistake if he joins Manchester City
Raheem Sterling will be making a big mistake if he swaps Liverpool for Manchester City this summer, Rob Jones has claimed.
The Reds are reported to be holding out for £50m from the Premier League runners-up after recent speculation suggested Liverpool had already rejected a £40m bid for the England youngster.
Sterling’s agent has made it clear the 20-year-old forward has no intention of signing a new contract with the Merseyside club after he rejected a £100,000-a-week deal earlier this year.
The former Queens Park Rangers forward has flourished under Brendan Rodgers’s management and played an important role in Liverpool’s title bid in 2013-14.
Obviously we’ll miss him as he is a great footballer. But I think he is making a big mistake if he leaves Liverpool
And retired Reds defender Jones believes Sterling could stump his recent progress if the England international opts to complete a big-money switch to The Etihad.
“It [a move to City] is more of a blow for him,” Jones told The Sport Review.
“He has come through the Academy, he has been working with Brendan and he would have developed even more this season.
“But moving clubs with a £50m price tag, it means even more pressure. I don’t think it is the right decision for the young lad.”
FA Cup winner Jones ruefully admitted, though, that he can’t see Sterling remaining at Liverpool beyond the summer after the public saga.
“It has gone too far now and I can’t see a way back for him,” continued Jones.
“I’m sure if the papers are right saying Liverpool want £50m, I’m sure they’re going to come to agreement.”
Jones added: “Obviously we’ll miss him as he is a great footballer. But I think he is making a big mistake if he leaves Liverpool.”
Sterling has scored 16 goals in the Premier League over the past two seasons for the 18-time English champions.
The Liverpool forward has racked up 124 appearances in all competitions for the Reds following his debut in 2012.
