Steven Gerrard: Liverpool striker has just as much ability as Luis Suarez
Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard admits the Reds didn't replace Luis Suarez last season
Steven Gerrard says Daniel Sturridge has just as much ability as Luis Suarez and Fernando Torres if the Liverpool striker is able to overcome his injury nightmare.
The England international made just 12 Premier League appearances last season following a string of calf and hip injuries left the 25-year-old striker’s campaign in tatters.
Sturridge is an unbelievable player. He’s got just as much ability as Torres and Suarez but we can’t get him consistently on the pitch
Sturridge and Suarez scored a combined 52 goals in the 2013/14 season but the entire Liverpool squad could only match that tally last term following the Uruguayan’s £75m move to Barcelona.
And former Liverpool captain Gerrard felt the Reds faced an impossible task trying to replace the South American last summer.
“It was mission impossible for me,” Gerrard told Rio Ferdinand as part of ‘Rio Meets Steven Gerrard’ which will air on BT Sport tonight at 10pm on BT Sport 1.
“I think even initially after Torres is was difficult to go and replace straight away. Suarez came out of the blue. I didn’t really know much about him but he was a phenomenal player.
“I think to myself now. Who do you go and get to replace Luiz Suarez if you’re Liverpool. You’re going to have endless amounts of cash. And then does that player wanna come with no Champions League? So it’s difficult to replace him.
“Sturridge is an unbelievable player. He’s got just as much ability as Torres and Suarez but we can’t get him consistently on the pitch.”
Rodgers signed Southampton striker Rickie Lambert and Italy international Mario Balotelli in last summer’s transfer window.
However, the pair managed a combined three Premier League goals for the 18-time English champions last term.
Liverpool completed the reported £29m signing of Roberto Firmino from Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim on Wednesday.
