Kieran Gibbs was quick to congratulate James Ward on Twitter after British wildcard eased into the third round of Wimbledon.

The British number four seed sealed his progress thanks to a 6-2 7-6 (7-4) 3-6 6-3 victory over Czech Republic’s Jiri Vesely in two hours and 35 minutes.

The 28-year-old, who is set to break into the ATP’s top-100 players for the first time, will receive £77,000 in prize money regardless of his third-round match.

Gibbs was a guest in Ward’s box for the second-round match, and the Arsenal defender praised the Briton on social media following his win on Court No2.

Ward’s victory means there are two British men in round three of the SW19 Grand Slam for the first time in 13 years.

2013 Wimbledon champion Andy Murray booked his place in the last-32 courtesy of a straight sets win against Dutchman Robin Haase.

The Scot took just one hour and 28 minutes to wrap up a 6-1 6-1 6-4 win against the world No78.
