Arsenal manager delivers Cech and Wilshere update after Lyon win

Arsene Wenger confirms that both Petr Cech and Jack Wilshere will start Arsenal's Emirates Cup clash against Wolfsburg on Sunday

Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Petr Cech and Jack Wilshere will start against Wolfsburg in Emirates Cup on Sunday.

The Gunners manager opted to start Spanish goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez against Lyon despite having signed the four-time Premier League winner in an £11m deal from Chelsea earlier this month.

Olivier Giroud, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Alex Iwobi and Aaron Ramsey all scored first-half goals before Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla sealed a 6-0 win after the break.

Asked about Cech’s absence for their Emirates Cup opener, Wenger replied: “Petr Cech will play tomorrow. [against Wolfsburg].”

England international Jack Wilshere, who made his return from an ankle problem at the end of the 2014-15 campaign, was another noticeable absentee from the starting line-up.

But reassuringly for any concerned Arsenal supporters, Wenger revealed that he opted to give Wilshere a rest for the clash against the Ligue 1 side and the midfielder will start against Wolfsburg.

“Wilshere is OK, he will play tomorrow,” he said. “I rested him today.”

Arsenal are currently top of Emirates Cup table with nine points courtesy of their resounding win against Lyon.
