Arsenal transfers: Napoli give Gonzalo Higuain update
Napoli appear determined to keep hold of Gonzalo Higuain this summer, despite apparent interest from Arsenal and Liverpool
Arsenal and Liverpool have suffered blows in their reported pursuits of Gonzalo Higuain after Napoli ruled out selling the Argentina striker this summer.
Arsenal have long been linked with a big-money move for the former Real Madrid man and have again been touted as a possible destination this summer as Arsene Wenger considers bolstering his attacking options at Emirates Stadium.
Liverpool were also thought to be keeping tabs on the striker’s situation after Napoli missed out on qualification for next season’s Champions League.
However, Napoli club president Aurelio De Laurentiis appears to have now all but ruled out any chance of Higuain leaving the club this summer.
“There is absolutely no chance that Higuain will leave,” De Laurentiis told Italian broadcaster Mediaset. “Gonzalo is a Napoli player.
“I have made his (release) clause clear in order to stop the constant speculation that appears in the press. “There is a precise clause.”
Higuain, who was also heavily linked with a move to Arsenal last summer, scored 18 goals and made seven assists in 37 Serie A games for Napoli last season but is apparently keen on a summer transfer away from the Italian club.
