Arsenal transfers: Sporting Lisbon rule out William Carvalho sale
Sporting Lisbon have no intention of cashing in on William Carvalho this summer, according to coach Jorge Jesus
Arsenal have suffered a setback in their reported pursuit of William Carvalho after Sporting Lisbon coach Jorge Jesus played down the chances of the midfielder leaving the club this summer.
The Portugal international has long been linked with a transfer to the Premier League, with the Gunners touted as a possible destination along with Manchester United.
However, it now appears that Sporting Lisbon are determined to keep hold of the midfielder beyond the summer, if Jesus’s latest comments are anything to go by.
Jesus is quoted as saying by Maxifoot: “William has great value. He will grow here together with the team.
“He is a footballer who has the characteristics to play more. I have no doubt he will do it with me.”
Carvalho has three more years left to run on his current contract at Sporting and is understood to have a buy-out clause of €35m.
The 23-year-old midfielder made a total of 30 league appearances for Sporting Lisbon last season.
Arsenal return to Premier League action when they host West Ham United at Emirates Stadium on the opening weekend of the season.
